Welcome to the Washingtonian Woods Waves!
The Waves are a community-based team formed to help foster a strong sense of neighborhood and provide our children
with an outlet for competitive swimming. The Waves are a member of the Montgomery
County Swim League (MCSL) in Division N. Information about the league and team
standings can be obtained by visiting their website at www.MCSL.org
The
Coaching Staff
Scott
Collins – Waves Head Coach
Once again, the Waves will be coached by Scott Collins. Scott currently works as a coach for the Hydrosonic Tiburones Winter Swim Team and
Dicks Sporting Goods. He comes to us with many credentials including over eight years of coaching experience in the MCSL.
Lindsey
Peller – Waves Assistant Coach
Scott will be assisted by Lindsey Peller. Lyndsey has worked at Washingtonian Woods swimming pool as both an
assistant coach and pool manager. She just finished her second year at Tulane
University. She has been
a swimmer in the MSCL league for many years until she graduated from high school last year.
Coach’s
Contact Information
As in the past, please refrain
from interrupting the coaches during practices or meets. This takes away from
coaching time for the entire team and disrupts the flow of practice. If you need
to discuss your child’s progress on the team, please contact the coaches to set up a meeting before or after practice. Scott can be reached by e-mail at scollins1016@comcast.net and Lindsey can be reached at lpeller07@aol.com

Fees
and Obligations
With the exception of the coaching staff, the Waves are
operated by a volunteer committee. Therefore, each family is REQUIRED to volunteer
to work a minimum of FOUR Meets. Positions include ribbon writers, runners, timers,
and many important activities to make our meets run more smoothly. If you are
unable to fulfill your volunteer commitment, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.
Please sign up promptly to ensure that you get the job that you prefer. Marcie
Blackman is the team’s volunteer coordinator. Marcie Blackman can be reached
at (301) 548-1085 or mdblackman@comcast.net.
The
team is funded by sponsorship donations and each swimmer’s registration fee of $100 for the first child, $90 for the
second child and $80 for the third child. All fees are due at the time of registration. Swimmers will not be allowed to practice unless their registration fee is paid in
full. Refunds will not be given after June 15, 2008.
Communication
All team information and updates will be posted on our
team website, annasbaubles.tripod.com/www.
E-mails
will also be sent out because this appears to be the quickest way to get information out. Please make sure to check the site
frequently to receive important communication and make sure we have your current e-mail address.
Swimwear
Team swimsuits can be purchased at Underwater Wear in Gaithersburg (they have relocated to the Walnut Hill Shopping Center
on 355). Every two years, the team is required to select a new swim suit, this year is the second year for our suits –
so same suit as last year. Swimmers MUST have a team suit to swim in a meet. Team
suits are not required for practices.
Age
Groups
Swimmers’ age groups are determined by their age as of June 1, 2008.
For example, if a swimmer is 8 years old on that date, he/she will compete in the 8 and under age group. Even if a swimmer turns 9 on June 2nd, (or later) he/she will still compete in the 8 and under
age group.
Swimmers in the six and under group (as well as swimmers new to the team this year) will need to pass a swim
test in order to participate. The test is given the first day of practice. Swimmers are required to swim 25 meters of the pool.
Swimmers six and under are additionally required to independently kickboard 25 meters.
If a swimmer cannot pass the test on her/his first attempt, the test can be repeated as often as the swimmer likes
through out the season—so don’t be discouraged! The coaches will
also be conducting group and private swim lessons and clinics weekday mornings at the WWD pool for an additional fee. A swimmer can swim in an age group older than his/her current age, but not younger. The coaching staff will determine if and when a swimmer will advance an age group
based upon the needs of the team at a specific meet.
Practices
Practices are held weekdays at the Washingtonian Woods
pool beginning Tuesday, May 26th. All swimmers are expected to attend
practice daily in order to participate in the meets. If your child cannot attend
practice, please let a coach or team representative know as soon as possible.
The
practice schedule is as follows (please note new times):
6 and under
5:00 to 5:30 p.m.
7 to 10 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
11 and up 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
ADDITIONAL
PRACTICES will be held on Monday,
Wednesday
and Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m. beginning on Wednesday, June 17th.
Weather
Weather-related pool closures may force the cancellation
or postponement of some practices. Please come to all practices prepared to swim
unless otherwise directed by a lifeguard at the pool. More often then not, thunder
closes the pool for a short period of time and later practices can be held. Do
not assume that if the pool is closed for a 5:00 practice that it will be closed for the remainder of the day’s practices.
About
Swim Meets
Swim meets are held on Saturday mornings (A meets) and
Wednesday evenings (B meets). Scores from Saturday meets are used to determine
the Waves’ rank within our division. Meets on Wednesday nights are intra-divisional
and the team score does not count toward our team’s overall standings. However,
times from both A and B meets are used to determine which swimmers will represent the Waves in A, relay carnival, and divisional
meets.
Saturday home meets begin promptly at 9:00 am and swimmers
are expected to be in the pool for warm-ups no later than 7:30 for home meets For
Wednesday home meets, we begin at 6:00 pm and swimmers are expected in the pool for warm ups promptly at 5:00 for home meets.
Once again, this swim season, all swimmers are to report to the WWD pool before traveling to away meets. For Saturday meets, swimmers are to meet at the WWD pool house at 7:45 am.
For away Wednesday meets, swimmers should meet at the WWD pool no later than 5:00 pm. If these times change due to distance to the pool, each family will be notified.
Line-ups for each meet will be posted at the pool the evening before each meet.
If your child cannot attend a meet, please let the coaching staff and team representative know as far in advance as
possible. All team members are encouraged to attend all meets regardless if they
are swimming or not. During meets ALL Waves team members are required to stay
in the team area.
We will hold time trials on Saturday, June 13th (9:00 to 11:00 am). All swimmers must be timed to
participate in up-coming meets.
